After going on a nice 3-day hut trip last week, I've decided to stop procrastinating and make a sweet ski sled. Not some wimpy little thing that slides all over the place, but instead something *hopefully* unstoppable in the backcountry. We'll see...

My first thought was walmart, which I hated. And unfortunately I fell pray to their late-night shopping hours and decided to give it a go. Funny I get what I deserve which is a giant warehouse filled with crap, and none of it is what I need. The best thing I found was something from Whamo. Target, Kmart, etc... it's all the same: Nothing.

Today was different. I found a sweet $5 sled off craigslist and was able to get it on my way home from work. Traffic was terrible getting there thanks to a combination of Santa and the Cherry Creek Mall, but the sled was worth it.

I will be following along with the techniques outlined on skipulk.com and will probably make some mods of my own along the way. The first of which is adding a pair of chopped detachable skis to the base of the sled. Maybe I'll take a picture or two but for now, just imagine long low and red :)

Idaho Springs and the locals

I have had the pleasure of meeting quite a few locals from Idaho Springs. Let me tell you something, each one of them is a very different person and they are all there for a reason.

If you're like many people from Colorado, you've never met a native from Idaho Springs. Instead, you've probably gone to the Indian Hot Springs or taken a gold mine tour... or you just stopped in for a bathroom break, some gas, and an egg McMuffin on your way up to the slopes. Or maybe you "know a great little place" and take your extended family all the way up there to drizzle honey and eat a pizza at BeauJo's. For a while there, I was among the same lot. I paid very little attention to the town, and therefore very little attention to the people living there.

Well, not anymore. Now, I try to visit this eclectic 1 square mile at least once a week as I foray into various backcountry adventures. And I don't just stop for some easy access to food or a bathroom. I really stop, park the car, get out and walk around. I talk to people, visit stores, and hit up the non-tourist restaurants and bars. You'd be surprised who you'll meet if you just go looking...

Idaho Springs has great history as a mining town. It was the location of the first substantial gold discovery in Colorado, and that brought loads of folks from all over the country looking to get rich quick. It's been the site of labor disputes, gun fights, and even movie productions. Legends like The Tommyknockers also have their roots there. Rugged individualists like "Crazy Robson", George Jackson, and James Underhill are but a few of the many that have shaped the city's history. It's been visited by US Presidents, prize fighters, poets; all types are attracted to this tiny and very historic place.

Most recently, it's turned into a tourist turn-off, serving those travelling to the Casinos, or those between Summit County and Denver. The town itself has a population of less than 2,000 people, which means practically everyone knows everyone. People living here full time enjoy the standard Colorado trades like family-owned motels, outdoor gear stores, and gas stations. Some are teachers, some doctors, some are store owners. Then there are people that work in the tourism industry giving tours of mines, guiding rafters down the Arkansas, and manning the lifts at the ski slopes.

Which brings me to my point: my latest and greatest encounter with a local from Idaho Springs is with a guy by the name of Ryan. He moved there in 1985, did a bunch of acid, and probably never stopped. He calls himself "Fryin' Ryan" and claims to know everyone in town. And I don't doubt him for an instant; he is a great guy... just a little crazy. He has all the standard garb for being a colorado transplant: an old Broncos t-shirt, a hat from a place nobody has heard of, stone washed jeans, and steel-toed boots. He lives in a trailer, and always seems to have just enough money for another beer. If you saw him on the street in Denver, shouting things and waving his hands wildly, you'd totally take him for being just another crazy homeless guy... yet 30 minutes away and seemingly a world apart, he's fairly normal, if not expected.

I started to wonder how a guy like this ends up in a tiny town like Idaho Springs. Why is this his city of choice? What keeps him here year after year? Then I started wondering why all of the other locals I've met stay there also and who else shares his story? ?! The gold rush is long over, and it's not like the place has a booming economy, some wonderful ski slope you can't pass up, or some other 'magical pull' that some towns seem to have. I mean, I totally understand why you would want to live in a place like Telluride or Steamboat, but seriously Idaho Springs?! Is there something I'm missing?

Which is why I make it a point to go there... at the end of the day, I always answer my own question. People stay there for the same reasons I go there: to get away! These locals are not interested in status quo, some new technology, or some fancy fad. They are not there to eat at 5-star restaurants and drive expensive cars. In fact, they are probably there because most other people AREN'T! These locals are true, real-deal Coloradans. They love our state for it's rugged truth, and they love expressing their individual right to freedom. And that's why I'll keep going back... the only difference is, I won't go on a 25-year acid trip and forget to move ;)

The Rat Experiments

Let me tell you about two studies which were not published. The first was described by Paul Stitt who wrote about an experiment conducted by a cereal company in which four sets of rats were given special diets. One group received plain whole wheat, water and synthetic vitamins and minerals. A second group received puffed wheat (an extruded cereal), water and the same nutrient solution. A third set was given only water. A fourth set was given nothing but water and chemical nutrients. The rats that received the whole wheat lived over a year on this diet. But the company's own laboratory study showed that the rats given the vitamins, water and all the puffed wheat they wanted died within two weeks---they died before the rats that got no food at all. I work for a marketing company called Tomkins and Scott LLC. We are not a typical marketing company. Many of our campaigns involve what is known as "black PR" - a covert type of marketing campaign designed to influence and sway public opinion through covert means. Although many of the techniques we use are not specifically in violation of the law, the fact that many of the clients we have give us money for black PR campaigns is.

I have decided to come out and tell the public about what my company is doing because I believe it is unethical and wrong.

Several years ago we received a contract from an agency with the city of San Francisco. The purpose of this contract was to block the spread of any information which spreads a negative light on the city, or might adversely affect its burgeouning tourism industry or robust real estate market.

Members of the agency were concerned about community forums like Craigslist which are read by millions of people. Our job at Tomkins and Scott, my job specifically, was to monitor Craigslist and summarily flag all postings which reflected negatively upon the city in any way. I am going public with this because, after 3 years of being a censor for Craigslist, I believe what we are doing is totally wrong.

I can tell you that the agency of the city of San Francisco which contracted us is not the only government agency to be engaging in black PR operations. If you knew the full list of agencies hired by us and sister firms you would be absolutely shocked. If the average citizen understood the extent to which the information being presented to him or her is being filtered and skewed they would be up in arms immediately.

Information is power and the powers that be fully realize this, which is why they are willing to devote multi-million dollar budgets to covert campaigns like ours to distort and funnel public perceptions in ways that they consider appropriate. Nothing could be more fundamentally poisonous to a democratic society than the blocking of free and open exchange of information and ideas.

I did a bit of blogging a while ago about the crazy uses of RFID. And yes, I told you to go get your passport while you still had a chance. Well, now that chance is gone and you have no option but the e-passport.

Beginning in August, each passport will contain a small RFID chip with all your vial info on it. SSN, Drivers License, you name it... most likely it's embedded somehow.

So, get ready for some serious skimming! Let's face it, people always hack technology. That is a fact that will never go away. New shit comes out and immediately people want to rip it apart and decode every last bit... and encryption makes the game that much more fun and challenging. Well, I'm glad I got my passport a while ago. Oh well, I guess it's inevitable that when I renew, I will also join the masses that can be skimmed while traveling abroad.

First of all, the movie hero is named "Jaguar Paw" and it seems like Gibson is obviously putting way too much effort into the damn sex appeal of his characters.

But what gets me is that lots of people are really giving the year 2012 big hype because it's only 6 years away. It's just the right time for all of our stupid capitalists to start making $$$ off the next "end-of-the-world" scenario. Of course, people will also start writing books and whatnot. Hey, why not publish a website or two?! survive2012

Enough with the bullshit capitalist agenda. If you are smart, you will not buy into any of this nonsense. 2012 is not going to bring the end of the world, and NO, the Mayans did not habitually sacrifice loads of people ( the Aztecs did ) in order to appease the gods... so if you decide to see the mel movie, just know that all his sacrifice hype is unfounded and glorified HOLLYWOOD.

The Mayans

I'm not scared about 2012 --- I'm actually quite intrigued. Countless generations have known about the Mayan civilization. Many that have studied their culture ( or what we know of it ) can say for sure that Mayans have a major prophecy that's seemingly just around the bend. One thing bothers people about the Mayan calendar,... it stops on December 21st, 2012 A.D

So after lots of reading, you begin to see that --- since the Maya had nothing else to watch BUT the stars --- they were very good at predicting the travel of various planets, moons, and stars. They made a calendar that was more advanced than our Greek system also. However, they made the same mistake that thousands of cultures make -- overconsumption and patriarchy.

Hundreds... thousands even... of years is a long time to be alive as a culture on the planet, however. Egyptian, Mayan, Aztec and other civilizations have proven the staying power of an organized human culture. And no doubt, the current First-World countries like USA and those in Eastern Europe have only just begun to witness major phases of the Earth's evolution. BUT---this time there's almost 6 billion people !!!

The Transit of Venus

If you've done any research on Mayan calendars, you'll probably run into a paper by John Major Jenkins describing the cycles of the sun and whatnot. You may also find a paper by Will Hart that talks about the Birth of Venus, etc. Believe what you want, and always remember that cosmic events DO happen, and they are very much related to our every day life. Day/Night -- the Seasons -- etc... are ALL a part of the moving, changing universe.

Unfortunately, as western thought has evolved, we have completely lost what the true concept of time should be... "The Mayan concept of time was radically different than the European and particularly the Euro-American with its growing perception of time as a digital readout. The Mayan calendar was a self evidencing model of reality that encompassed an array of sequences and cycles."

Well, I'm a firm believer that we are ALWAYS living in one of the most important times. Yet, it's undeniable that we are also living in a time that many cultures including the Maya, Hopi, and others have predicted as a major universal time of evolution. Let's get ready for the next 13,000 years and make them amazing!

So, if you have any plans in 2012, make sure you take a minute in June to remember the Transit of Venus. It may just be the beginning of the next great chapter in the universe.

We all know it's been around for a while. Heck, it's probably in your cat!

So what's the big deal with RFID? Well, of course, since more and more of these things are being used for more and more purposes, the internals are being exposed to all sorts of people. As a society, we rely to heavily on RFID even now. But it's going to the extreme and as more people get their hands on the technology, a few decide to exploit the system.

So now we have RFID viruses... malware... etc. Does your cat have a virus? Maybe. Can someone overheat an RFID tag and explode it inside a cow? Maybe. How about steal your personal information off your Social Security Card ?! Maybe. Or could they just get it from your Drivers License? Maybe.

It's been proven that RFID tags can be viewed by as much as 30 feet away!

There's even folks that have RFIDs implanted in themselves. Don't believe me? Check this out and see just how retarded people have become.

Sorry. I really haven't had time. Been having too much fun!

But if you really do read any of this for any reason whatsoever, the reason why I've been missing partly has to do with the fact that I took a chunk out of my leg in Hawaii

Good thing I have a wonderful family and soulmate! Sarah, Ashley, Mom & Dad really helped me out. Hopefully we'll all go back to Hawaii and make it all the way through the Volcano this time!

So instead of swim, I just hung out on the beach making sandcastles mainly. Digging out the seawall was a trip -- that ocean sure is relentless.

Now, of course we did all of this in an effort to comfort Dad while he ate his starfruit!

Julio and I went and saw the preview release of Syriana.

All I have to say is "Maattt Daamon". Seriously, this movie has a great storyline and absolutely blows it with a terrible casting call by this jackass. Oh well.

On the flipside, the movie was really well filmed and I thought it makes some great points. Frustration is a worldwide issue, and anyone knows that when their own neck is on the chopping block, they will do whatever it takes to make their situation better.

I went to see Donovan with my dad at the Boulder Theater.
It was FANTASTIC! The hurdy gurdy man always rocks my world.

Instead of last time, which was an intimate acoustic set, Donovan brought the most amazing band from SanFran out with him. The group was impressive to say the least. Great riffs from the lead guitarist made this evening one to remember.
